Communications Technicians Apprenticeship

What Is A Communications Technician?
Communications Technicians will install cable systems, maintain and repair structured cabling installations to meet the communication needs required to provide a wide range of residential and commercial services in telephone service and computer networks. Systems to be learned include: Voice - Telephone, modem, fax; Data - Local, Metropolitan and Wide Area Networks; Video - Cable TV, closed circuit, video-conferencing via ISDN.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age. There is no maximum age.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Have a valid driver’s license. Many employers require a DMV printout showing a good driving record.
  • Purchase tools and equipment (estimated cost $250.00)

Benefits
Communications Technician Apprenticeship is sponsored jointly by the American Communications Contractors Association (ACCA) and Communication Workers of America (CWA). As an employee and union member the apprentice will have medical and dental coverage as well as vacation, pension and 401K benefits available.

Program
To be an apprentice you must first be employed by a signatory union employer. During your apprenticeship you will work and attend related training classes, which will include hands-on job-training tasks. On-the-job training and instruction will enable you to become an installer able to meet BICSI certification and who installs to the ANSI/TIA/EIA standards. Communications Technician is a career step in the growing telecommunications installation profession.
