What Is A Firefighter?

In today’s world, firefighting has evolved into a multi-faceted profession.  Firefighters today not only suppress both structure and wild fires, but they perform a wide variety of rescue operations.  These can range from vehicle extrication to handling a building collapse.  Firefighters also respond to all types of medical emergencies on a daily basis.  Many firefighters have an EMT certification, and others have gone on to achieve paramedic certification.  Besides rescue operations, firefighters can be found in related areas such as fire prevention education and hazardous materials response.

Qualifications/Requirements

*   To be a successful firefighter, a candidate must be both physically and mentally fit, and must have the ability to function as a team player.  A good way to prepare for the firefighting profession is to start in a physical training program that will keep you in good overall physical health, and take classes that will give you a basic understanding of the physical and scientific elements of firefighting.  Classes such as algebra and geometry, chemistry and environmental science, and biology and physiology will help develop a good foundation.
